I love my job!

It always brings me great pleasure if I have been in some way able to help another person feel better.  For me, it’s not about getting the “the client” (of course, I LOVE being the therapist to work on a concussion case), it’s about making sure people get good quality care.  Bowen (neuromuscular therapy) is an amazing modality. I cannot answer definitively how it works to resolve concussion but I do have some theories that I intend on working on in the coming months.  My friend and colleague Craig Mattimoe hypothesized that Bowen resets the cellular homeostasis in the brain. I love this theory, because there are certain neurotransmitters that are released into the brain after a concussion. When the brain normalizes, the neurochemicals come back to normal.  A couple of years ago, I looked into what it would take to study this effect. Well, let’s just say that it involves a PhD thesis (any takers??) and an expensive lab at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Kids. So, it could be possible! Another theory I am researching is the effect of muscular and fascial tension and it’s effect on the blood flow to the brain. I would also love to explore whiplash and TMJ and the role they may play in concussion symptoms.  I could go on and on about all the things I would love to research and explore in regards to Bowen therapy and concussion treatment. All I know now, is that it works and these days with all of the media attention on concussions, it’s always good when something can help rather than hinder.  And to play devils advocate – if it didn’t fully resolve the PCS, it didn’t hurt either and maybe, just maybe, another injury got healed instead. It’s a win-win situation.

I truly love my job and if someone told me 20yrs this is what I would be doing now, I wouldn’t have believed them. I owe my passion to my Californian friend and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
