Immediate Concussion Symptoms

Immediately after a blow to the head an athlete may exhibit some of the following symptoms:

  • Appearing dazed and or confused
  • Decreased playing ability
  • Poor balance, lack of coordination
  • Slow verbal response
  • Change in behaviour
  • Unaware of time, date and place
  • Vacant stare
  • Forgetfulness
  • Loss of consciousness

Common Concussion Symptoms

Concussion symptoms vary from person to person, however these are some common symptoms to watch out for.

  • Headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Foggy feeling
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light and/or sound
  • Sluggish
  • Seeing flashes or stars
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Poor concentration
  • Disrupted sleep
  • Memory problems
  • Fatigue/drowsiness
  • Irritable/anxious
  • Low energy
  • Emotional/sadness/depression
  • Feeling of pressure in the head.

You Should Know...

On average, symptoms can clear in 7-9 days post concussion, however may linger for days, week, months and even years.  Players should not return to play until all symptoms are clear and they have passed Return to Play protocols.
